Responsible Gambling
Gambling should stay entertainment. The moment it stops being fun — or starts costing money you can't afford to lose — it's time to step back. This page lists the free US help lines that work 24/7, explains the limit and self-exclusion tools you can turn on today, and is honest about one thing most affiliate sites gloss over: offshore operators are not part of any US state self-exclusion program.
US help lines and support organizations
- National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) — 1-800-522-4700 (call/text), live chat at ncpgambling.org. The national umbrella; routes you to your state's certified counselors.
- 1-800-GAMBLER — 1-800-426-2537. The number you'll see on nearly every sportsbook ad; run through NCPG's network.
- Gamblers Anonymous — gamblersanonymous.org. Free 12-step meetings, in person and online.
- SAMHSA National Helpline — 1-800-662-4357, for co-occurring substance and mental-health concerns.
- Gam-Anon — support for family members affected by someone else's gambling.
Warning signs it's becoming a problem
- Betting more than you planned, or chasing losses to "get even."
- Borrowing money, selling things, or hiding the extent of your play.
- Gambling to escape stress, or feeling restless when you try to stop.
- Lying to family about time or money spent, or missing work/obligations.
If two or more of these sound familiar, take the NCPG's free self-assessment or call the helpline. You don't have to hit "rock bottom" to ask for help.
Tools you can turn on today
Reputable operators build these controls into the cashier or account settings. Use them before you need them:
- Deposit limits — cap what you can add per day, week, or month.
- Loss and wager limits — stop play once you hit a set amount.
- Session time reminders — pop-ups that show how long you've been playing.
- Cool-off periods — lock yourself out for 24 hours up to several weeks.
- Self-exclusion — close the account for months or permanently.
Protecting minors
Gambling is strictly for adults — 18+ or 21+ depending on the operator and product. Keep account credentials private and consider parental-control software such as Net Nanny or your operating system's built-in filters if children share your devices.
A note on odds
Every casino game carries a built-in house edge, and every sportsbook prices margin into its lines. Over time, the math favors the house — that's how these businesses exist. Treat any deposit as the cost of entertainment, set a budget you're comfortable losing, and never gamble with money earmarked for rent, food, or bills.
